Spiced Tea and Shawls

It's that time of year when hot drinks and warm clothes aren't just luxuries; they're necessities. So I have this nice recipe for my spiced tea and added this new shawl made by a technique that I invented/taught myself. After all, there's nothing new under the sun, so maybe I just re-invented it.^^ It's kind of a cross between crochet and weaving, so I have no idea what to call it. Suggestions?

Makes about a pint of spiced tea mix

18 oz Tang (or other sweetened orange drink mix)
1 dry unsweetened lemonade packet
1 tsp cloves
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar (or to taste)
3/4 cup instant tea

Mix. That's it; just put it in a bowl and  mix. To brew you just add a heaping spoonful to a coffee cup with some hot water.

Honeycombs and Busy Bees

Today I finally finished my 'MCAT' afghan. It looks like a golden honeycomb, or maybe a benzene ring complex. My geek is showing^^ I started the thing over a month ago while I was studying for the MCAT, but I ran out of the brown yarn and had to track down some more. Nothing goes together as well as books and crochet, except for maybe music and dancing. I think I'll add this as a made to order item in my shop. It's super warm, and just the right size to double as a giant shawl!

Granny Square Queen (AKA the Calculus Blanket)

I realized I hadn't posted my finished Granny Square blanket. It ended up being 47 + edging rows around. I call it my calculus blanket, because I started it right before that summer class from (insert name for unpleasant afterlife area here) and finished the day I took my final exam. It's probably the reason I still have fingernails left^^

Pumpkin Patch Amigurumi and Dragonfly Yukata

These are my latest goodies. The first is a pumpkin patch set. I made some of these last year, and they were really popular (even my grandmother wanted some^^)You can find them at my Etsy store!

Amigurumi/ Crochet Pumpkin Patch

And this is my latest men's yukata order. The buyer sent me the fabric from http://bugfabric.com/, which was a lovely grey-blue with a slight gold under tone. The pattern had dragonflies and water patterns all over it. The only problem was the person who cut it was sloppy and cut it crooked. I hate when they do that; it ends up wasting fabric.

Handmade lace

Today I finished up over six feet of hand crocheted lace. Would you like the pattern? I made it up myself, though I'm sure there are similar ones out there. Let me know and I'll e-mail you my version^^ This batch will probably end up on Etsy; I was going to edge something with it, and than decided to do something else. It's become a regular habit for me. But since I almost never use patterns, I pay the price^^

Pseudo Irish lace and bamboo dilemmas

I am working on this pseudo-Irish lace shawl/veil/hijab/shawl. I call it pseudo, because I am sewing the motifs to a open weave cotton fabric as opposed to making my own net. It's still taking forever; it took two days just to crochet the lace trim.

Pseudo Irish Lace Scarf/Veil/Hijab/Shawl Thing

Also, I have these segments of bamboo William cut while he was here. Not sure what I'll do with them, but I'm sure they'll be cool^^

Also, who wants to play spot the wacky things on Heather's bookshelf?

Recycling and Other News Part 2

Today I finished the recycled yarn project. It ended up being a shawl/wrap, but Maggie still thinks it's a baby blanket. I guess you could use it as one, but since there are no babies here I don't see why we will.

Also, my pond is so cover in pond pads you could walk across it with out getting one's feet wet. To bad they don't have pretty flowers like lotus or water lilies. I'm not sure you can eat them either...

I'm also thinking about teaching a crochet class. What do you think?

Recycling, and other news.

I have been shamelessly working on something else instead of items for my shop. I found these two children's sweaters in my mending pile, and figured they were more or less unmendable. So I unraveled the yarn and started crocheting. Not sure what I'm making yet, but it's coming along;

Recycled Yarn Project

I also taught Maggie a new crochet stitch; the slip stitch. She already knew the chain and single crochet stitches, so why not? She worked in rounds until she got this. It's a little messy, but;

Hard working little thing, isn't she?

I also sold the Angry Bird earrings, after adding some mustaches;

New Etsy store!

So, I finally decided to set up my Etsy store. I've already been favorited by people I don't know! Seriously though, I'm kinda exited about it. So go over to Mori-chan's Garden and check it out!

Cinderella's dream

Yesterday, today, and tomorrow Holly is in her high school play. All told she acts in nine performances. She plays the Evil Stepmother in the retelling of Cinderella, titled Cinderella's dream. Basically it's a comedy, with the two stepsisters being played by boys and lots of funny stuff like setting skirts on fire. It's hard for Holly to play her part; she has to yell the entire 2+ hours of the play, and because she is shorter than most of the other actors she has to wear really high stiletto shoes. She has blisters and bloody spots all over her feet, and the first night she yelled herself hoarse. But the play was so good I went to see it again.

The Evil Step-family and Cinderella. Holly's the one in burgundy, playing Lady Nervosa Pigmentosa, also known as the Evil step-witch.

You can't see it, but the other stepsister just did something stupid. With names like Ecxema and Euphoria what did you expect? Also, I made the pumpkin, the most important prop^^

Tiny Pumpkin Amigurumi

Speaking of crochet pumpkins, I made this for Holly. She can wear it as a necklace or a bracelet charm.

I also made Holly a bracelet, but she ran off with it before I could take a picture. Maybe tomorrow...

Crochet Beads

I saw a picture of a beaded bead while looking for something on Google. When I saw it I thought it looked like crochet. Then I thought to myself; why can't I cover a bead in crochet? Apparently I can, because I have. A whole rainbow of crochet beads ready to make something with. After I crocheted them, I found where some one else had also thought of it. It's a cuter way of re-inventing the wheel, but I like them!

Friday the Thirteenth

You know how Friday the Thirteenth is supposed to be an unlucky day? Well, the only bad luck I had was pricking my fingers making my latest Tsumami Kanzashi.

Pinstripe Kanzashi

I have been told it looks rather steampunk-ish. What do you think?

Mini Mushroom Jewelry

I also made some mushroom jewelry. There are two charms and a set of earrings. They may look like poisonous mushrooms, but there super cute!

Happy Easter!

It's Easter!

The Easter Bunny Amigurumi

Here comes the Easter bunny! At my house, the Easter comes while we are at church.

Lemonade Easter Egg Cookies

And Easter means treats, and eggs. Why not both at the same time? These lemonade cookies were fun to paint. Food color paint, that is^^

Cat's Eye Bead Weave set

My new Easter jewelry set. I hadn't tried this kind of bead weaving before. What do you think?

Blog Anniversary

Today marks the first post of this blog. Of course, after the 'Google ate my blog' fiasco that doesn't mean that much. But hey, that's what I get for not keeping backups.
Here's a little something that also took me a year to make, just because I ran out of yarn and it took me that long to find some more. Perhaps I need back up yarn balls too?

Amigurumi

Amigurumi is a Japanese word simply meaning knit/crocheted toy. Basically amigurumi are stuffed animals, dolls, etc which is made by knitting/crocheting the form of the toy and then stuffing. The method of making these toys is not Japanese at all; however, those that knit or crochet often use the word amigurumi simply because saying something like 'a stuffed, crocheted cat' is a mouthful.
Amigurumi are usually worked in the round, which means instead of working back and forth like you see in afghans and sweaters, you work around and around. Amigurumi have very few if any seams; often the only stitching involved is the attaching of limbs. They come in as many shapes and sizes as any other soft toy, and are gaining popularity with both handicrafters and toy collectors of all ages.
I crochet, not knit, so the only example pictures I have are of crocheted amigurumi. I can't knit something that doesn't look like a cat chewed it to save my life! However, if you search for images under amigurumi, you can see many different types. Some are really creative, like an amigurumi Spock^^

Easter and Mother's Day

Unfortunantly, Easter fell right before finals week this year, and I didn't bother to post anything. So I'll post the Easter stuff along with Mom's present. Crochet is such a good thing to do while studying; put your fingers on auto-pilot and go to town. I never follow patterns any way, and if you over do something a few quick tugs puts you back on track. Gets rid of fidgiting fingers and nail biting too ^^
